How is playing a musical instrument related to Mathematics skills and does it really help for Mathem

To answer these questions, I stated my research question “To what extend does playing a musical instrument help children to develop their Math skills?” I found it important to investigate this question because most of the students struggle in Math. By investigating this question, we can find different methods to help students to achieve their Math skills.There have been so many researches showing that using the music skills activates the brain cells which are in the same part of the brain, as well as using mathematics skills. Most of the articles I’ve read mention that there is a neurological relationship between understanding music and playing an instrument by moving finger tips and wrists, and understanding mathematics. The data collected from the experiments show that playing a musical instrument does help increasing the scores in Math tests even though the experimental groups of students are not aware of it. The research findings indicate that playing the music on the instruments is just like applying the math knowledge in real life. Playing the notes with their values and combining different values according to the correct rhythm in the music sheet is a great way to apply mathematical issues such as additions, multiplications, fractions, ratio, grouping, patterns, symmetry, equations, …etc. in the real life. As a music instructor with Math background, I always believed that reading and understanding the music sheets are just like solving Math question. Since we learn better when we apply, playing a musical instrument helps students to practice their mathematical knowledge so that they improve their mathematics achievement. For further studies, researches should examine this question “To what extend does having a high, medium and low ability of playing a musical instrument help children to develop their Math skills?” ​Zehra Ceylan
